Rochester, NY -- Two members of Elmira College's cross country programs were recognized for their supreme sportsmanship throughout the 2015-16 season.
'17 of the men's cross country team was selected by the Empire 8 Conference as EC's Men's Cross Country Sportsman of the Year, while Hannah Gaston
'18 was named the Women's Cross Country Sportswoman of the Year, announced by the league office on Thursday.
In the inaugural season of competition for the Elmira men's cross country team, Park competed in all seven races, highlighted by a personal-record time of 33:02.10 in the 8,000-meter race at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational. He was clocked at a close 33:03.70 in the Soaring Eagles' first-ever Empire 8 Conference Championship meet.
A native of Bluff Point, NY, Gaston participated in six races during her sophomore campaign and ran new personal-record times in both the 5K and 6K. At the Harry F. Anderson Invitational, she beat her previous best by over 20 seconds, running the 5,000 meters in 24:09.70. Gaston's new PR in the 6K was over a minute better, as she finished the course at the Mike Woods Invitational in 29:07.00.
Empire 8 emphasizes that "competing with honor and integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. Following the conclusion of each season, the conference honors one representative from each institution who displays outstanding character by including them on the Sportsman and Sportswoman Teams.
