Beginning with the 2016-2017 academic year, Elmira College will offer students the option to choose Gender Inclusive Housing.
Gender Inclusive Housing is a housing option that provides sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students the opportunity to choose their living arrangements regardless of gender. The Office of Residence Life only will assign students to live in Gender Inclusive Housing when it is requested. The College has designated Perry Hall second floor as the Gender Inclusive Housing option.
“Gender Inclusive Housing creates an inclusive environment, where students are given the opportunity to live with whomever they chose regardless of gender, sex, or gender identity,” says Brandon Dawson, Dean of Student Life at Elmira College. “This empowers students in making, choices about their living situations and allows Elmira College the opportunity to meet the diverse needs of our students.”
The idea of Gender Neutral Housing originally arose in 2015 during a forum hosted by the College’s Committee on Inclusivity. Based on comments and feedback received from students during the forum, the Office of Residence Life began work on the new housing option. Following several months of refining details, the policy was finalized and students were notified that Gender Inclusive Housing would be available beginning Fall 2016.
“While many Elmira College students are over the age of 18 and are legally able to make decisions about their housing, the College encourages students to maintain an open dialogue with their parents,” says Dean Dawson. “Students under the age of 18 will need parental consent to apply for the Gender Neutral Housing.”
The Office of Residence Life will be hosting two information sessions to provide students with further details and an opportunity to ask questions. If students are unable to attend the sessions, they are encouraged to contact Dean of Student Life, Brandon Dawson, or Director of Residence Life, Erin Hunter. Parents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the Office of Residence Life at (607) 735-1821 or email@example.com.
