Elmira College men's lacrosse continues its support of The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) partnership with the HEADstrong Foundation to help raise cancer awareness and funds for improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families by sponsoring the first annual USILA/HEADstrong Cancer Awareness Week from Friday, April 15th, to Saturday, April 23rd.
In support of this new initiative, the Elmira College men's lacrosse team wore special HEADstrong socks, trimmed in the organization's signature lime green color, when the Soaring Eagles hosted St. John Fisher College on Tuesday, April 19th, at Campus Field. According to the USILA, over 70 institutions across all three levels of NCAA men's lacrosse will sport HEADstrong awareness accessories in support of the cause throughout the week.
Participation in the USILA/HEADstrong Cancer Awareness Week complements EC's fundraising efforts from the fall. The Soaring Eagles grew out their fuzzy facial hair as part of the annual HEADstrong Mustache Madness campaign. Elmira raised $4,291, 10th-most among teams participating in the nation-wide event.
"They did an outstanding job in terms of organizing it and seeking out the donations," head coach Preston Chapman said. "A great deal of credit has to go to these young men for understanding the importance of such a worthy cause."
"We thought we could find something that would be a good way to give back to the community, and the HEADstrong Foundation is a tremendous organization," team captain Bryce Richmond '16 said.
AJ Bourdon '16 ranked 10th among all individuals who collected donations during Mustache Madness, raising over $1,440. While Bourdon acknowledged he personally doesn't know anyone who has been affected by cancer, he found inspiration from reading stories of cancer victims such as HEADstrong founder Nicholas Colleluori, a former Hofstra University men's lacrosse player who lost his battle with the disease in 2006.
"We really wanted to leave a lasting impression on the program by doing something for the community," Bourdon said. "Everyone wants to look back on their college career and say that they have accomplished something special and I truly believe that we have done that by supporting HEADstrong this year."

Late Hofstra University lacrosse player, Nicholas Colleluori, founded the HEADstrong Foundation to raise awareness and funds for cancer patients and their families before losing his personal battle with cancer. EC will support the cause by wearing special HEADstrong socks during the game against St. John Fisher College on Tuesday, April 19th. In the fall, the Elmira men's lacrosse team raised $4,291 as part of HEADstrong's Mustache Madness campaign. EC raised the 10th-most among all of the teams that participated in the annual fundraising event, which brought in over $170,000 to support HEADstrong's mission.
