During the week of May 2, approximately 430 students from Broadway Academy will visit Elmira College as part of the College2Kids-Kids2College Program. Dr. Linda Pratt, Charles Dana Professor of Education and Executive Director of Teacher Education Programs and key members of Elmira College’s Teacher Education Department coordinated the week’s events
The schedule of events included a daily welcoming ceremony, as well as structural academic sessions with titles such as “Readers’ Theatre” with Dr. James Nageldinger, Assistant Professor of Literacy; “Introduction to Law” with Andrew Stage ’02, Assistant to the Executive Director of Teacher Education; “STEM Workshop: Building Success” with Dr. Hollie Kulago, Assistant Professor of Childhood Education; “Water Quality Testing” with Professor Martha Evans and Dr. Michael Pratt; “Art Smart” with Dr. Deborah Owens, Associate Professor of Education – Literacy; and “X-Out Mathematical Basketball Challenge” with Mr. Dylan Crawford ’16, Elmira College student.
About Broadway Academy Curriculum
During the 2015-2016 academic year, seventh graders at Broadway Academy participated in a user-friendly college awareness curriculum. This was designed to make middle school students more aware of how education impacts their future life choices. Students learn more about college, explore careers, make connections between college and job opportunities, and begin planning for the future.
About the Kids2College Experience
Funds for the College2Kids-Kids2College (C2K-K2C) program come from a federal College Access Challenge Grant (CACG) awarded to the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu), an organization representing New York’s 100+ independent colleges and universities, by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), the state agency designated to administer CACG for New York State. Remaining funds for the C2K-K2C program with the Elmira City School District come from cIcu and Elmira College.
The C2K-K2C program’s overreaching goal is to have students explore the connections between middle and high school study and their future college and career opportunities, and work to build a college-going culture in the middle school. A six-session curriculum, Kids2College®, developed and donated by The Sallie Mae Fund, a national nonprofit college access organization, is taught in every class across the entire 7th grade. The curriculum content focuses on education options, career exploration, paying for college, and college and career connections. At the end of the program, all the students experience life on a college campus with a half-day visit that features meeting college professors and students and participation in classes, tours and lunch on campus.
