Last week elementary students from the Soaring Summer Scholars program at Finn Academy, an Elmira charter school, were on campus for guided tours and an interactive look at college life.

The visit, coordinated by Finn Academy and the Office of Career Services, included a fun day of tours, scavenger hunts, and even a live chemistry demonstration. Elmira College students and athletes also met with the groups to answer questions about sports, travel experiences, and getting into college.

“Partnering with Finn Academy to bring their summer scholars to our campus has been an enriching experience. As it was many of the scholars’ first time on a college campus, they were able to see a lecture hall, a residence hall, gymnasium, and theatre, which gave them an idea of what the college life is like,” said Julie Fielding, Director of Career Development at Elmira College.

“The Soaring Summer Scholars Program showcased how continuing education can help to achieve future goals and aspirations. After the completion of the program, hearing one of the scholar’s exclaim ‘I want to grow up so I can go to college!’ validated the impact this visit left on the young students.”

Finn Academy is the first charter school approved in the Southern Tier of New York. The school opened in August 2015 as a K-3 school and will grow to a K-8 school.
