In honor of this weekend's Bald Eagle Appreciation Days, we are flying back in time to when Soaring Eagle was named the Elmira College mascot.
After becoming co-educational in 1969, Elmira College launched a robust men's sports program, attaining NCAA affiliation in 1971. In need of a mascot, Elmira chose the "Golden Eagles." However, upon learning that another nearby college already had the moniker, Elmira chose instead, the "Soaring Eagles," to pay homage to the city of Elmira, known as the "soaring capital of America."
Today, our Soaring Eagle mascot makes regular appearances at games, events, and special traditions on campus and is the symbol for all EC athletics.
Go Soaring Eagles!
