Let’s scrub in and learn more from Lyssa…

I first decided on nursing when I was in high school and I had the opportunity to shadow nurses in many different specialties. Since starting my education at Elmira College, nursing has become more than a major, it has become my passion.

I have worked as a patient care technician (PCT) at Rochester General Hospital hematology/oncology floor for the past three years. I love working with cancer patients, hearing their stories, and making a positive impact in their lives. Patient interaction is my favorite part of working in healthcare, it makes this field so rewarding.

The nursing curriculum at Elmira has allowed me to holistically care for patients and to see the big picture of medicine. I think the EC program is unique from other schools because clinical rotations start during sophomore year as opposed to junior year like many other bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) programs. I feel that my courses, along with the different clinical rotations I completed, have helped me become a well-rounded nurse. My clinical experiences have also allowed me to excel at my current job and secure one after graduation.

In February, I was offered a job on the hematology/oncology unit in the Wilmot Cancer Center at The University of Rochester Medical Center. This job will allow me to not only work in the specialty I enjoy, but allow me to participate in clinical trials and advancements in cancer research. Throughout the application and interviewing process I had the opportunity to speak with countless nurse managers who were impressed that I am receiving my BSN from Elmira College. This was just another reassurance that the education provided here is invaluable.

I am extremely thankful for all of the opportunities Elmira has given me not only professionally, but personally as well. I will take the tools I learned here with me throughout my professional nursing career.
