Elmira College’s Meier Hall Receives Regional Masonry Award

Elmira College’s Meier Hall recently earned the Central New York chapter of the American Concrete Institute’s Masonry Gold Medal Award.
Since the opening of Meier Hall in August of 2010, the multipurpose building has received a great deal of national attention for its creative brickwork, architectural style, and its sheer beauty.
Masonry Construction magazine awarded Elmira College’s Meier Hall with Project of the Year.Masonry Construction, a publication that provides helpful information on masonry products, masonry repair and the tools required to build in masonry, honored Meier Hall with the top prize. Meier Hall took home the award for Project of the Year in the Institutional and School Category for Best Educational Facility.
Designed in traditional Collegiate Gothic architectural style, this building extends the traditional beauty of, what the Philadelphia Inquirer called, “the picture-postcard-perfect campus.”
The Brick Industry Association (BIA) awarded Elmira College’s Meier Hall the National Brick in Architecture Award. The BIA, a national trade association, honored projects that innovatively used clay brick. Meier Hall took home the prize for Best-In-Class Winner in the Educational Category. Meier Hall was acknowledged nationwide in a special issue of Brick in Architecture and was also included in an issue of Architectural Record.
The 64,000-square-foot style dorm features arched entryways, crenellated towers, and more than 35 hand-sculpted structures that compliment the brick.
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded Elmira College’s Meier Hall the Central New York Design Award. The AIA, an association for licensed architects, honored projects with innovative ideas, attention to detail and dedication to the design. Meier Hall took home the prize in the Institutional Category.
Among the building’s features are five stories with a lower terrace level, 140 beds with 95 combinations of residential rooms, a 4,000 square-foot formal lounge with a grand limestone wood-burning fireplace, a 900 square-foot student lounge, a multimedia classroom and a seminar room.
Meier Hall has also been selected as a featured Building of America Award case study. Building of America allows individuals and companies to review and learn award-winning projects and how they make a difference for its community. Meier Hall will be featured on the homepage of Building of America’s website.
