InDesign®: The Basics of Desktop Publishing

Wednesdays - January 8, 15, 22; 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

InDesign is the industry standard for page design and layout by graphic design professionals. Learn the basics of the software program to design and produce newsletters, brochures, posters and other print media – from concept to print-ready files. Students will complete one design project of their choice. Some desktop publishing experience is helpful but not required.

Fee: $125 per person (includes flash drive and textbook)


Photoshop®: The Basics of Photo Editing

Thursdays - January 9, 16, 23; 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Photoshop is one of the most powerful graphics editing programs on the market for photographers and graphic designers. Learn the basics of the program for photo retouching and manipulation, special effects, filters, type, etc. Learn how to create the correct formats for print and web applications. Some Photoshop experience is helpful but not required.

Fee: $125 per person (includes flash drive and textbook)


Zumba for Beginners

Mondays and Wednesdays - January 12, 15, 20, 22; 5:15 - 6:15 p.m.

Have you tried Zumba and felt like you had two left feet? Were you going right when you should have been going left? You don’t have to know how to dance to have fun at Zumba! This class will be like no other Zumba you’ve tried before.

You will definitely get a workout while doing some ‘fun moves’ which are a little easier than what’s called ‘hard core’ Zumba. The instructor will include some Latin steps along with weight- bearing exercises. By practicing in a non-intimidating setting, you’ll be a Zumba lover in no time! Interested individuals of all ages are invited to attend the sessions. Bring a friend and have double fun while burning calories.  The instructor is licensed to teach Zumba with CORE specialty.

Mark Twain in Elmira

Tuesdays - January 28; February 4, 11, 18; Saturday, February 22; 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens, Mark Twain, married Olivia Louise Langdon of Elmira, New York, on February 2, 1870.  By 1874, the Clemens family had established a pattern of spending summer months at Quarry Farm in Elmira – at the home of Susan and Theodore Crane, Olivia’s older sister and brother-in-law.  Here Clemens penned some of America’s greatest literature. 

In this four-week, non-credit course, explore how the premature infant from the Missouri backwoods became, arguably, the most important author of American literature in the nineteenth-century – a man whose image and writings still influence American life and thought today.  Along the way, learn how his experiences in Elmira shaped the course of American literature. 

Students will receive a copy, at no charge, of Mark Twain in Elmira (2013).  The course will conclude with a trip to Elmira College to visit the Study, Quarry Farm, and Woodlawn Cemetery.

Microsoft® Excel® Boot Camps - Part II

Mondays - January 27; February 3, 10; 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

This course is designed for the intermediate spreadsheet user. Learn advanced techniques covering the organization, analysis, and presentation of data usig Microsoft Excel 2010. Prerequisite: Microsoft® Excel® Boot Camp – Part I or permission of the instructor.

Fee: $99 per person (without flash drive and textbook); $125 per person (with flash drive and textbook)


Self Defense for Women

Mondays and Wednesdays - January 27, 29; February 3, 5; 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. This class meets at the Schuyler County Human Services Complex, Owego Street, in Montour Falls, NY.
Wednesdays - February 26; March 5, 12, 19; 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. This class meets at the Elmira College campus.

This course in behavioral self-protection will help participants manage fear by understanding the dynamics of a violent encounter and exhibiting self-control.  Participants will have the opportunity to train in realistic scenarios to put their training to the test in a fun and safe environment.  Topics to be covered include 1 on 1 Fundamentals, Fighting from Disadvantaged Positions, Surviving an Active Shooter, Sexual Assault, Home Invasion and much, much more! There will be an opportunity to train through repetition with guidance from a qualified instructor Zachary Pugh is a Police Officer with the City of Elmira and is a Behaviorally-Based Combatives Instructor, a Functional Edge System Behavioral Adjunct Law Enforcement Trainer and a Functional Edge System Behavioral Self-Protection Advanced Trainer. He has a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Elmira College, Class of 2011. There is limited enrollment for the workshop and is for women only. No prior experience is necessary.  Course fee covers all necessary equipment.

Customer Service and Cultural Sensitivity

Thursdays - February 6, 20; 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

With our communities, and visitors to our communities, becoming increasingly diverse, encouraging sensitivity and understanding of diverse populations is crucial.  This six-hour course is offered in a two-week period with participants completing exercises between sessions to implement learned ideas in order to effectively listen to customer needs and provide personalized assistance. By identifying the components of cultural diversity, employees of service industries and non-profit organizations will be better able to understand their impact on different areas of the hospitality industry.

Microsoft® Access® Boot Camp - Part II

Mondays - February 24; March 3, 10; 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Do you already know how to use the most popular desktop database... MS® Access®? Would you like to learn how to use more features to turn your mountains of data into valuable information? Then these classes are for you!

This course will cover more advanced topics such as: maintaining data integrity; creating custom forms; creating queries; creating custom reports; importing and exporting data; making your database user friendly; database security; and customizing MS® Access®. (This course is the second half of a two-part series designed for the beginning database user... new students with experience are welcome!) You will use a case-based approach to explore the basics and learn how to work with a relational database.

Learn the basics of event management; learn how to assist in the planning of successful events. Covers post-event ‘to-do’ list including gathering feedback, sending thank you’s, and identifying what went right and wrong, and planning for the next event.

Public Relations as a Marketing Tool

Wednesdays - March 12, 19, 26; 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Participants in this program will understand the basics of effective public relations and sound communication strategies, including real-life case studies of what works and what doesn’t. In addition, they will learn how to identify themes of clear, consistent, creative expressions of your brand, focusing on the most important elements underlying integrated marketing communications. And finally, by completion of the course, develop methods of dealing with negative press associated with service recovery issues, and how to respond to negative media attention, web-based in particular.

Finger Lakes Wines and Comfort Foods

Tuesday - April 8; 6:00 - 8:30 p.m.

Marti Macinski, owner and winemaker at Standing Stone Vineyard in Hector, will help you discover new wines and new ways of pairing wines. You’ll learn about a variety of wines and what flavors best pair with a variety of foods.
