This course serves as a basic introduction to the principles of video art production. Simple animation, audio mixing, and visual storytelling techniques will be explored and applied to a final “video short.” Possible genres for final projects: an abstract music video; a portrait of person, place or thing; a “how to” video. Collaboration with classmates will be encouraged.
Jan Kather (MFA, Cornell, 1982) teaches darkroom photography and video art at Elmira College. Often collaborating with other artists, she initiated an international video installation project Fragments, in partnership with artists Michael Chang (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Marty McCutcheon (Berkeley, California) at Elmira’s Arnot Art Museum in April 2011. She is also part of the ongoing international collaborative Exquisite Corpse Video Project, orchestrated by Brazilian artist Kika Nicolela, as well as a collaborative video project titled Subject Matters.
