SEE EC students have access to a variety of resources that will help them succeed in their courses. First of all, classes are small and interactive. There will be plenty of faculty contact and support both inside and outside of the classroom. The Gannett-Tripp Library is open until 11 p.m. every day so that students have access to print resources, research support, and academic technology when they need it. The friendly Residence Life staff will be living in the dormitory with the students and also accompanying them to events. They make themselves available to the students whenever necessary. The SEE EC students will get to know Elmira College staff members and their faculty very well over the two weeks spent on campus, and that is the real strength of this program.
Jennifer DeCapria, Director of Student Success and Advocacy at Elmira College, will be the main facilitator of the Student Success component. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology from SUNY Brockport. She holds her Master’s degree in Social Work from the University at Buffalo. She has extensive experience teaching courses in success strategies and Human Services on an adjunct basis, while working as a counselor providing both academic and personal counseling.
During the two weeks of SEE EC, you will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of social and academic activities. These include off-campus trips, movies, games, and more. More specifically, our SEE EC students are personally invited to “mocktails” and dinner at the President’s Home. We have traveled to Darien Lake Theme Resort for an incredible day of daring rides, games, food, and a memorable laser light show at dark. We attended and Elmira Pioneers baseball game and visited the National Soaring Museum. After a breathtaking view of the overlook, we had a picnic barbeque at Harris Hill Amusement Park where we played mini golf, rode go carts, and tested our skills at the driving range and batting cages. Other activities have included: Therapy Dogs, Bowling and an Ice Cream Social, Team Trivia, Lawn Games, Karaoke, Movie and Video Game Nights, and more.
In addition to fun activities, we also offer our students several interactive workshops: “Student Success: How College is Different from High School,” “Career Choices,” and “Understanding the College Admissions Process.”
