The Guy Mendilow Ensemble is an award winning sextet comprised of world-class musicians representing a variety of national backgrounds: the USA, Israel, Palestine, Japan and the UK. Formed in 2004, the Ensemble has been enthusiastically received in venues ranging from world and traditional music festivals to performing arts centers, progressive Jewish organizations and universities.
Alongside touring with the Guy Mendilow Ensemble, members are on the faculty of leading music schools like Boston’s Berklee School of Music and New England Conservatory and tour/record with the likes of Bobby McFerrin, Yo Yo Ma, the Assad Brothers, Christian McBride and Simon Shaheen. The Ensemble is currently based in Boston, MA and Brooklyn, NY.
The Ensemble’s latest touring show, Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom: Ladino Songs Renewed, awakens audiences to traditional Ladino music and its endangered language from the Sephardi communities of Sarajevo, Salonica and Jerusalem. In emotionally evocative, artistic concerts and immersive community programming, the sextet brings to life the adventure, humour and grit of old Ladino songs and tales.
The Ensemble makes Ladino music relevant to diverse audiences in a show that weaves cinematographic musical arrangement together with poignant narration. Epic tales of love lost to the seas and the intrigue of kings and queens crackle in vivid performance.
The Ensemble’s residencies engage community members across generational, cultural and linguistic boundaries through innovative educational programming for elementary/high school/college students, seniors, and intergenerational exchanges.
