Lead by Serving Your Community

Elmira College is where the common good is a required
course. We expect Elmira College graduates to be thrust
into leadership roles in their future communities. Community
Service is an important part of fulfilling that role.
All Elmira College students participate in a community service
activity for a minimum of 60 hours. This service is an academic
course required for graduation. New students register for Community
Service before beginning their first term at Elmira, with the
expectation that they will complete the requirement by the end of
their first year.
Many find the experience so rewarding that they continue
volunteering to help others all four years.
Elmira is the ONLY college in the nation to require and give
credit for both an internship and community service.
"Elmira College students ... don't just care about the bottom
line; they care about those at the end of the line,
too." - Senator Elizabeth Dole, Honorary Doctor of
Laws, Class of 1995
