International Studies at Elmira College encompasses, and overlaps
with many disciplines such as Anthropology, Comparative Literature,
Economics, International Business, Political Science, Sociology,
and various language studies, to name a few. As a result, there are
numerous possibilities of specialization. For example, one may
specialize in the study of different peoples through learning their
languages and literature. One may decide to deepen understanding on
economic and political dynamics between international actors such
as states or international organizations like the United Nations,
the World Bank, or the European Union. One may also study various
aspects of societies and peoples of a specific geographical area of
the world. Consequently, a degree in International Studies can lead
to a wide variety of career paths, and the possibilities are
limited only by one’s imagination.At Elmira College, the International Studies
program’s requirements encompass a wide array of
learning experiences, with the goal introducing students to the
three areas of international studies: European, Asian, and General,
while providing a curriculum that will teach students to think and
write critically and analytically.
International Studies majors, in addition to several basic
requirements, complete the requirements for one of the three areas.
Special emphasis is placed on foreign language skills and
cross-cultural experiences. It is strongly recommended that
students plan to participate in one or more of Elmira
College’s study abroad opportunities.
Several different opportunities at Elmira College relate to the
field of International Relations, such as the Model United Nations
Club and the International Club, study abroad opportunities, and
Internship opportunities at the United Nations in New York City. A
Term III course “The Model United Nations Security
Council” is offered regularly, which including a trip
to the United Nations headquarters, and in the past some students
have been able to participate in the international Model United
Nations.
