Childhood Special Education (Students with Disabilities Grades One Through Six)

Elmira College’s Childhood Special Education certification program was developed in response to the ever-growing demand for special education teachers in today’s elementary school classrooms. The program helps aspiring teachers acquire the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to effectively teach and assess learners with disabilities. Enrollment in the program is appropriate for undergraduate students who want to work in inclusive or special education settings with learners with special needs in Grades 1 through 6.

Through coursework and innovative clinically enriched teaching and learning experiences, Childhood Special Education candidates gain critical understandings of how to use research-validated methods for teaching learners with disabilities, manage classroom behaviors, assess their learning, and implement adaptive and assistive technologies for instructional and assessment purposes.

Upon completion of program requirements and New York State teacher certification exams, candidates enrolled in the Childhood Special Education program are eligible for institutional recommendation for New York State initial teaching certification in Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6. They also have the option to pursue dual initial certification in Childhood Education Grades 1-6 and Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6
