Meet Henry Montilla '12
“Without a doubt my time at EC went by too fast. If I had to give a piece of advice to future students it would be for them to cherish their time at EC and the people they meet.”

Henry Montilla ’12,
Pennsylvania State University Medical School at Milton Hershey Medical Center

Students preparing for a career as a physician, dentist, veterinarian, physical therapist, physician assistant, pharmacist, podiatrist, chiropractor or optometrist will get their best start at Elmira College.  Follow your passion, and any academic major will help you develop the skills crucial to the practicing physician:  problem-solving, effective communication, and critical thinking skills.

Most students choose a major in one of the sciences, although Psychology, History, Sociology, Spanish or English have also been popular majors or minors for those interested in health care.  Fulfilling a broad-based liberal arts education with attention to the science pre-requisite courses is a smart way to prepare for future study in medical school.

Research is an important component of pre-health professions preparation.  Elmira College encourages student collaboration with faculty mentors to conduct research and present the results at national and international conferences, giving applicants an extra perspective from outside the traditional classroom.

Lectures from visiting scientists and visits from professional school admission counselors give students the opportunity to explore various careers in science and medicine.  The Pre-Health Club is another resource for information. Shadowing opportunities, internships, resume workshops and surgery observations have been sponsored activities by active members of this club.

Elmira College has several special early acceptance programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, chiropractic, and podiatry.  We can recommend students for early admission at the end of the freshman year in agreements with Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, as well as Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.  See the pre-health professions advising page for the latest articulations.
