Pre-Medical, Pre-Dental, Pre-Veterinary

Elmira College encourages students seeking a career in Medicine to major in an area they enjoy. Most Pre-Med students choose the Biology, Biology-Chemistry, or Chemistry major because an interest in science drives their interest in Medicine. Others choose to major in another area of interest, such as Psychology, while taking the prerequisite Science courses, including a year each of college biology and college physics, as well as two years of college chemistry (including organic). Whatever the major, students develop the skills crucial to the practicing physician: problem-solving abilities; clear, effective oral and written communication; and critical thinking skills.

Other courses are often recommended for students interested in physical therapy, veterinary medicine, or physician assistant programs, some of the other health care professions Elmira College students often choose to pursue. Some Mathematics, often calculus or statistics, is recommended. Courses in psychology, ethics, humanities or social sciences are often suggested. Fulfilling a broad-based liberal-arts education through the Elmira College distribution requirements normally satisfies the entrance recommendations.

At a monthly pizza lunch speaker series, information about the various health professions, applications to professional schools, summer research, and other relevant topics are discussed. The Pre-Health Club is another resource for information. Shadowing opportunities, internships, and surgery observations have been sponsored activities by active members of this club.

Elmira College participates in an Early Assurance program where highly qualified students may apply to medical school late in their sophomore year. If accepted, the student would finish his or her academic career at Elmira College without the pressures of the application process. Also, an agreement with Upstate Medical Center provides the opportunity for two, selected Elmira College students with a combined SAT score of 1200 and a grade of A or A- in the first year chemistry AND biology courses to apply for early acceptance.
