Russel Kahmke ’06
Biology and Psychology
Russel Kahmke ’06, surgical resident at Duke University Health System, provides medical and surgical care to individuals with head and neck pathology, and diagnoses and treats adults and children with conditions ranging from congenital malformations to cancer.
Learning how to medically manage diseases of the head and neck as well as operate safely and effectively is a challenging combination. Working at a tertiary care facility also affords Russel the ability to treat the most complex patients. “The complex anatomy, use of technology (lasers, microscopes, drills), and mix of medical and surgical management are huge advantages of being an Otolaryngologist.”
For anyone interest in this career field, Russel advises to “meet and shadow a physician, specifically an Otolaryngologist, to help you determine if this is what you really want to do in life. Volunteer work, research, extra-curricular activities, and a strong academic record all help in acceptance into medical school.”
