2010 Women's Lacrosse Season in Review


The Elmira College Women’s Lacrosse team posted their second straight 6-11 season in 2010 behind third year Head Coach Katie Augustine-Moore. The Soaring Eagles started the season strong winning 4 of their first 7 games, but struggled down the stretch going 2-6 in a tough Empire 8 Conference. For the second straight year Elmira was led in scoring by Lindsay Mitchell ’12 (Arnold, MD -- Arnold) who reached an impressive 40 goals on the season and received Empire 8 Conference Honorable Mention honors. Mitchell started 11 of only 13 games played and scored on 45.5% of her shots, while adding 7 assists for a total of 47 points, 34 ground balls, and 23 draw controls.

Behind Mitchell, Meghan Pass ’12 (Owego, NY -- Owego Free Academy) greatly improved in her second season. Tallying 9 points in the 2009 season, Pass exploded for 32 goals and was  the Soaring Eagles second leading scorer in 2010. Starting in 14 of 17 games, Pass finished the year with 34 points and 21 ground balls. Also improving from the previous season were team captains Jordan Donegan ’12 (Syracuse, NY -- Corcoran HS) and Emily Zimmerman ’11 (Syracuse, NY -- Marcellus). Donegan received Empire 8 Honorable Mention honors, starting in all 17 games played, notching 26 goals and 7 assists, while scooping 45 ground balls, and finishing with 14 draw controls and 13 caused turnovers. Starting 14 games, Zimmerman scored 17 times with 7 assists for a total of 24 points. Zimmerman also recorded 45 ground balls, while notching 27 draw controls and causing 21 turnovers.

In the mid-field third year player Sarah Ware ’11 (Chesterfield, MO -- Marquette) also had a standout season, and was also named to the Empire 8 Conference Honorable Mention team. Ware started in 16 of the 17 games she played finishing 4th on the team in scoring, netting 17 goals and leading Elmira in assists with 13. She also recorded an impressive 74 draw controls, 27 ground balls, and 14 caused turnovers.

Joining her in the mid-field were 4th year players Ana Steele-Norton ’10 (Kennett Square, PA -- Millbrook)  and Alison Nowak ’10 (Wayland, MA -- Wayland HS) along with 2nd year player Jessica Reed ’12 (Geneva, NY -- Geneva). Steele-Norton received Empire 8 Second Team All Conference honors for her defensive efforts; starting in all 11 games played posting 5 points, 31 ground balls, and 24 draw controls. Nowak started 13 of 17 games she appeared, totaling 13 ground balls, and 7 caused turnovers. Reed started in 9 of 16 games she appeared and finished the season with 2 goals, 29 ground balls, 13 draw controls, and 11 caused turnovers. Marissa Drake ’12 (Schenectady, NY -- Schenectady) who was also in the midfield  appeared in 15 games, notching 10 ground balls and caused 4 turnovers, and was named as Elmira College’s representative for Sportswoman of the Year.

Making a great impact this season were first year players Marki Michaels ’13 (Manchester, NY -- Midlakes), Colette O’Brien ’13 (Binghamton, NY -- Seton Catholic), Emma Schepers ’13 (Elmvale, ONT -- Team Ontario), and Blythe Crasto ’13 (Bedford, NY -- Fox Lane HS). Michaels started in 16 games scoring 11 goals and assisting on 11 others for a total of 22 points on the season. She also added 31 ground balls, 8 draw controls, and caused 8 turnovers. O’Brien started 14 of 17 games played and finished with 13 goals and 2 assists with 25 ground balls, 9 draw controls, and 14 caused turnovers. Schepers and Crasto had 6 and 5 goals in their 11 and 14 appearances, adding 9 and 7 ground balls respectively.

The net minders for the Soaring Eagles this season included Stephanie McClure ’12 (East Rochester, NY -- East Rochester) and Mary Kate Gellerman ’13 (Frederick, MD -- Urbana). McClure started 10 of the 14 games played in net finishing with a 3-7 record, a goals against average of 14.99, and a save percentage of 39.6%, while also recording 25 ground balls playing in the field. Gellerman started 7 of 11 games she appeared in goal. She had a 3-4 record with a 15.55 goals against average and a 37.6% save percentage, notching 19 ground balls and 7 caused turnovers.

On the defense for the Soaring Eagles were Hannah Shabanowitz ’12 (Lewisburg, PA -- Lewisburg), Lauren Jasminski ’11 (Simsbury, CT -- Simsbury), and Kim Stanton ’10 (Jordan, NY -- Jordan Elbridge). Shabanowitz played in all 17 games tallying 28 ground balls and causing 15 turnovers, Stanton started in 15 of 17 games scoring twice totaling 12 ground balls, while Jasminski was solid starting in 15 of 17 games played notching 6 ground balls. Also making contributions for Elmira were Mariah O’Connell ’12 (Candia NH -- Bishop Brady) and Sallie Wright ’12 (Horseheads, NY -- Notre Dame). O’Connell started 6 of 12 games finishing with 6 ground balls while Wright appeared in 2 games scoring once on the year.

Only losing three players to graduation the future is bright for the Elmira College Women’s Lacrosse Team in the 2011 season, as they return experienced players at all positions.
