Retention and Advocacy
Our office focuses on students and their social, personal, and academic adjustment and growth.
The Office of Retention and Advocacy is the primary retention center on campus. We are dedicated to making the student experience successful. We provide personal student support, outreach/drop-in services, parent education and support, information and referral to other campus resources. Our office focuses on students and their social, personal, and academic adjustment and growth. Many just come to talk with someone.
Services offered or coordinated through Retention and Advocacy includes:
- Academic Success Coaching - Students work 1:1 with a Success Coach to enhance time management, organization, learning strategies, study habits, etc. as well as learn of important resources on campus. Success Coaching utilizes an individualized approach helping students identify academic strengths and strategies that will aid in learning.
- Peer Mentoring - A service that assists students with their academic adjustment and personal acclimation to college and campus. Students work 1:1 with a trained peer to help adjust to the college lifestyle, learn different study strategies, or learn about the different services offered on campus.
- Student Advocacy – We are available to assist currently enrolled students to successfully navigate and access the College’s administrative systems and community resources. We are here to listen to students’ concerns about life on campus, campus policies, etc. and to provide support or referral to appropriate resources
- Request a Peer Mentor or Student Success Coach
- Workshops focused on success strategies – Topics include, time management, organizational skills, exam taking skills, note taking skills, etc.
- College Student Inventory (CSI) – Administered to all incoming freshman, this inventory identifies individual strengths and challenges as well as receptivity to support services so that we can prioritize our resources to meet the needs of students.
- Early Alert Referral - Faculty and staff are encouraged to submit their concerns for a student(s) via the Early Alert Referral form. The Office staff will develop a plan of action to assist a student in overcoming any obstacles to their success.
- Transition Course - LRS 1010 EC Experience – A 6-week, 1.5 credit hour course that facilitates intellectual and social integration of students into the academic community. Provides specific methods and strategies which students may adopt to promote personal growth and success both in the college environment and throughout life.
- Withdrawal/Leave of Absence process - The Director of Retention and Advocacy is the contact person for any student seeking to withdraw or take a Leave of Absence from Elmira College. An Exit Interview is required for either of these situations and can be conducted electronically, in person, or via the phone.
