Yesterday, Elmira College held the annual Community Service Fair in the Dining Hall of the Campus Center. There were more than 60 organizations present to offer community service opportunities to more than 350 students taking the course this year. The Community Service requirement is a tradition at Elmira College, and it is a graduation requirement that helps students contribute to the communities surrounding the College.
Five of the organizations present are run by EC students, including the EC Lions Club, Colleges Against Cancer, the EC Red Cross Club, Circle K, and Rotaract. Additionally, five off-campus community service organizations were represented by EC students that belong to those groups. There was also an alumni presence at the Fair, with multiple EC alums representing the service organizations.
Typically, the Community Service Fair is held in Term I during Fall Orientation. This is the first year that the College has expanded the program by connecting it to Freshman Writing Program, and encouraged freshmen to start their community service during Term II, after they have had time to settle into the community and research community service opportunities.
