On Sunday, June 1, Elmira College held its 156th Commencement Exercises at the First Arena on North Main Street in downtown Elmira. The College conferred 312 degrees at the ceremony including five associate’s degrees, 268 bachelor’s degrees and 39 master’s degrees. Twenty-one Elmira College students graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Numerous graduates received College prizes for academic achievement, student leadership, and community service. Three faculty members received College awards, one each for scholarly development, administrative leadership and community service.
Award-winning author Russell Banks delivered the commencement address and received an honorary Doctorate of Letters. In his address, Mr. Banks urged graduates to observe and embrace the world they inhabit and seek historical context as they do so. He also noted the importance of storytelling as a testament to witnessing history.
