Is there a limit based on how many credits I can take in a term?

Full-time students at Elmira College normally complete 30 to 35 credit hours per academic year by registering for 12 to 14 credit hours in each of the Fall and Winter Terms and 6 to 7 credit hours in the Spring Term.

Students may elect to register for a minimum of 9 credit hours and a maximum of 14 credit hours in each of the Fall and Winter Terms, not including Community Service and the Encore Program, and for the Spring Term a minimum of 4 credit hours and a maximum of 6 credit hours. Students who wish to include a Physical Education course in Spring Term may register for a maximum of 7 credit hours.

Students with a cumulative grade point average, either earned at Elmira College for returning students or earned in transfer by first-time transfer students, may elect credits in the Fall and Winter Terms only according to the following schedule:
Cumulative Grade Point Average Allowable Credits
2.699 and below 14.0
2.700 through 2.999 14.01 - 15.0
3.000 through 3.599 15.01 - 16.0
3.600 and above 16.01 - 21.0

Decisions about course load limits for first-time transfer students will be based upon the student’s transfer cumulative grade point average as computed by Dean Michael Halperin, Elmira College Registrar, using Elmira College standards. Thereafter, only the student’s Elmira College cumulative grade point average will be used to determine allowable credits. Requests for exceptions to the Course Load rule must be submitted in writing to the Registrar. If an exception is granted, there will be an additional charge per credit added to the student’s bill.

AXCEL students are exempt from all limits on credits taken in the Fall and Winter Terms.
