“Being part of the Elmira community makes me feel like I am part of something bigger than myself. Elmira College really cares about each and every student as an individual. Students are encouraged to get involved, to grow socially and professionally by attending various engaging school and community events. Elmira College is a community, a place where every student can find their own niche and make a difference no matter where their career path leads them. Elmira is now my home away from home and everything I had been searching for in a college. I consider myself lucky and fortunate to wear purple and gold and I am proud to display my eagle pride."
How did you get involved on campus?
I became involved on campus by joining JV soccer, Varsity softball, the Lions Club, and Ski Club. Both sports teams provided me the opportunity to join programs where I could meet new people, make friends, develop bonds, trust, push myself, have others rely on my athletic abilities, find balance, provide support, to be happy, and allow me to do what I love, which is competing on various sports teams and make some lifelong friendships. The Lions Club allowed me to volunteer at an adult home and make a difference in elderly patient’s life by hearing their stores. I am a nursing major because I want to make a difference and give back by helping others. I volunteered at the home and through the Relay for Life and it matters to me that I can make a difference because I want to help others.

What did you like about community service, encore, core, or the freshmen writing program?
Freshman Writing enhanced my writing style and provided me with valuable lifelong skills. The rigors of this course improved my overall writing process and required that I read authors/books and reflect upon ones that I may not had chosen on my own. This course opened my eyes and I learned to become a better writer with the essays and twenty page paper. I know can analyze text and support it well in my thesis and essay.

Describe one part of the orientation trilogy (SR, FO, PW) that benefited you.
Summer registration and fall orientation benefited me greatly because I was able to get a feel of the campus as well as start to make connections and new friends. Both orientations made me feel like I was part the great Elmira traditions and made my transition to college smoother. I am from Maine, the first in my family to attend college, and leaving home for the first time. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like being nine hour away from my family but the orientation programs made me feel comfortable with the campus and allowed me to make connections and make new friends.

Explain any experiences you’ve had on a sports team, or with a coach.
Being a part of varsity softball at Elmira truly made my freshman year memorable. My teammates and coaches were fantastic and helped me not only on the field but off the field. Softball became my second family and they always made me laugh, and I enjoyed playing the game I love. When most students leave over April break our team stayed on campus because we were in-season competing. Our coach had the entire team over to enjoy an amazing Easter dinner. This made me realize that the team is more than just a team, we are a family. My coaches encourage all players to be their best, they provide valuable insight, and are there to listen. When you join a sports team at Elmira, everyone wants to represent the purple and gold proudly and with that brings teammates together. I wear my purple and gold with pride and consider myself fortunate to play for Elmira College.
