Students and Professors Present Posters at National Conferences in Boston and Dallas

Senior Dan Moriarity ’14 and Junior Melanie English ’15, along with Professors Dr. Benjamin Lovett and Dr. Christopher Terry, recently attended the 2014 Eastern Psychological Association annual meeting in Boston, MA. At the event, Dan, Melanie, and Dr. Terry presented a first-authored research posters based on separate research projects.

Dan Moriarity ’14 presented “Predictors of Students’ Benefit from Extended Time Testing Accomodiations,” which was based on research conducted in collaboration with Dr. Benn Lovett and Dr. Ann Buzub.
Melanie English ‘14 presented a poster entitled: “Constantly Connected: Predictors of Problem Cell Phone Use,” which was based on research conducted in collaboration with Dr. Christopher Terry.

Dr. Christopher Terry also presented a research poster entitled “Problematic Cell Phone Use and Perceived Risk Predict Texting While Driving,” which was based on a related project showing that college students who score higher on a measure of problematic cell phone use are more likely to text while driving, independent of their level of perceived risk and daily texting rates.

Four Elmira College students and Dr. Corey Stilts, Associate Professor of Chemistry, recently attended the 2014 National American Chemical Society in Dallas, TX. At the conference, which was attended by approximately 15,000 individuals, the students presented posters on the research they performed the last two terms and during summer research:

Courtney Foote’15 and Taylor Kent’15 presented “Evaluating PACT (photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy): Interactions of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(methyl-4-pyridyl)-21H,23H-porphine-tetra-p-tosylate salt with Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria”

CJ Young’14 and Leonard Warner’14 presented “Synthesis of porphyrin derivatives by solid phase synthesis on an oxime resin bead”

Dr. Stilts presented a poster titled “Reinventing the prelab: Using QR codes and videos to make a safer and more efficient organic chemistry lab”. This poster described the use of videos to supplement the organic pre-lab experience.
