Elmira College students will once again intern with Southern Tier Creating Assets Savings and Hope to provide free tax assistance to community members for the 2015 tax filing season.

Southern Tier CA$H utilizes the services of trained volunteers to assist people in electronically filing their returns and delivering service to those taxpayers in the Southern Tier who most need assistance.  During the 2014 filing season, five Elmira College students completed internships through the program.   Each of the students received a certificate from CA$H and the Internal Revenue Service in recognition of their service to the community.

Currently, every student at Elmira College completes a 240-hour internship and many of those hours are completed with organizations in the Elmira region, such as Southern Tier CA$H.

Southern Tier CA$H is a coalition of community partners, led by Arbor Housing and Development, that provides free income tax assistance to low- and moderate-income individuals and families with a focus on securing Earned Income and other tax credits.  Participants may also be individuals with disabilities, non-English speaking taxpayers and the elderly.  The program is administered nationally by the Internal Revenue Service and is also known as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA.
