It has been nearly a year since the Legendary Class of 2016 crossed the Commencement stage. Today, we are catching up with these young alumni to see how they are doing and share their advice for the Class of 2017.

This week’s “Where Are They Now,” story spotlights Caitlin Dwyer '16, a marketing assistant at the Chemung Canal Trust Company in Elmira, New York.

Let’s head to downtown Elmira and learn more from Caitlin…

Caitlin Dwyer Where Are They Now?

Essentially, immediately after graduation I had no firm plans. I did not find or start full-time employment until a month after graduation. When I did find employment, it was not exactly what I had envisioned.

I accepted a relationship banker position at the Chemung Canal Trust Company office in Owego, New York. Honestly, I did not have a knack for finance (just ask Professor John Savash), but I ended up loving it.

The responsibilities of the position were closer to my business administration concentrations in marketing and management than I initially had thought. I was interacting daily with clients in a customer service role.

After working in this position for almost seven months, a position in the marketing department opened. I knew this was my chance to start following my true passions and interests. I quickly sent in an application, interviewed, and was offered the position. I am now serving as the marketing assistant responsible for events at Chemung Canal, and in the Elmira area.

My advice to the graduating class would be: do not stress out if you do not have your life all figured out after Commencement. Good things take time. Also, and maybe more importantly, do not be afraid to take a position outside of your major. It turned out great for me, and in the end, paved the way for my marketing career.

Good luck 17's!
