Position Summary:

Elmira College is a private coeducational, liberal arts college located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State inviting applications and nominations for the position of Director of Residence Life.

The Director of Residence Life is a full-time twelve-month professional administrator who supervises all aspects of Housing and Residence Life. The Director is responsible for the programmatic and daily operations of eleven residence facilities housing more than 1,000 undergraduate students, supervising a staff of seven professionals and approximately 50 student paraprofessionals.

Reporting to the Dean of Student Life, the Director serves on several key college-wide planning and management committees, is a judicial system administrator, and collaborates with Student Life staff, Buildings & Grounds, and other administrative offices to implement comprehensive services to students. This individual is also responsible for selecting, training, and evaluating the department’s full-time professional and Graduate Assistant staff, and both preparing and monitoring operating and capital budgets. An off-campus apartment and full meal plan are provided.


A Master’s (or higher) degree in student services administration or the equivalent is required in addition to at least three years of administrative or management experience that includes planning, budgeting, personnel selection, supervision, evaluation, program development, and assessment.

Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal skills, a comprehensive knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulations related to Residence Life and student housing, creative problem-solving, conflict resolution and decision-making skills, effective written and oral communication abilities, and a dedicated work ethic.
