With over 35 majors and minor areas of concentration, Elmira College lays the foundation for a diverse, cross discipline education, encouraging you to both specialize and explore.
“Like many students in my generation, I wasn’t born when the 9/11 attacks occurred. I didn’t see the before and after. I just simply grew up oblivious to it, only learning about it through school,” shared Sam Cunha ’26, an Elmira College Business major, student-athlete, a nationally registered emergency medical technician (NREMT), and member of the U.S. Army National Guard.
Now, a volunteer first responder himself with the Elmira Heights Fire Department, Cunha has found connections to the people who risked their lives by walking into the burning towers to save as many people as they could. And to the 343 first responders who perished in that effort.
Last year, Cunha put on his firefighter uniform, got on a stair climber at his gym, and climbed 110 flights of stairs in 28 minutes to simulate the intense physical feat performed by those firefighters 24 years ago.
Cunha plans to do the same this year, but won’t stop at 110 flights. Instead, starting in the morning on September 11, he will climb as many flights as he can until he can no longer do so. He will do this to raise money for the Elmira College Extraordinary Circumstances Scholarship, which provides money to EC students in distress.
“I wanted to do something that could impact the campus and the community I’ve grown to love so dearly in the best way I possibly could,” he explained. “I know firsthand what it’s like to have an unexpected catastrophe hit my life and turn it upside down. When I learned there was an emergency fund meant for students who experience unexpected and drastic changes or emergencies in their lives, I knew that was something I wanted to be a part of.”
Cunha, who was hesitant at first to share his story, wants to be clear about the reason he is taking on this challenge.
“I’m beyond excited and grateful I have the opportunity and support from the EC Community to do this. But I want to make sure it’s clear that I am not doing this for me. It’s not for attention or praise. I’m doing it simply for the person or persons who find themselves in need of help, and I just hope I can be part of what helps them in that moment.”
